They are both fantastic, but considering that my wrist size is just under 7", if I could only keep one, I'd keep the 36mm 14270. Great glossy dial, perfect layout, feels super comfortable. I am considering to acquire a Rolex Explorer 1, but after watching tons of reviews on the 214270 (39mm) version and the new 124270 with 36mm I am more confused than ever. I have a 6.5 inch wrist and would love to see some pictures of the watch on the wrist of someone with actually the same exact wrist size. I have a 6'5" wrist and agree less than 40mm is the sweet spot. The BB58 fits very well and is 39mm (I think). 34mm - 40mm seems about right depending on the style. They are both fantastic, but considering that my wrist size is just under 7", if I could only keep one, I'd keep the 36mm 14270. Great glossy dial, perfect layout, feels super comfortable. The only item missing for me is the great Easylink extension on the 39mm model.
The Oyster Perpetual line is easily the most versatile line of watches from Rolex, and offers a little bit of something for everybody. These new 39 mm watches are simply superb but understated pieces that offer incredible versatility without costing a fortune, or . I tried on a 39mm in its first incarnation and felt like it fit my 6.5" flat wrist fine (my largest watch is a Speedmaster Professional and I think I just squeak by with that size but mostly wear a 16610 and 16710).As someone with a similar sized wrist, the smallest Rolex size for you/me should be 39mm (previous gen OP). I vote 41mm for sure!
The lugs are curved and contour to the wrist better, and the case back is lower. The Sub has a higher case back due to water resistance and flatter lugs so it sits more on top of the wrist rather than wrapping the wrist, if that makes sense. My own personal opinion, but a Datejust should not look too large on the wrist. For most 6.5" wrists, 36mm would be the optimal size and give the most classic look. If you want "wrist presence", I find professional models better suited as they tend to still look fine when on the slightly bigger side. The DJ 41 is actually 39.xx mm and having an OP 41 it ‘wears’ like a 39mm watch despite the advertised size. While the dial itself is big the case dimensions are smaller. I've tried a DJ41, it's on the cusp of whether it's too big. Except, on my 6.5″ wrist it’s quite a bit too small: The dial layout of the 34mm is very smilar to the 39mm OP (taking into account that they have different proportions). Everything you need, nothing you don’t.
